Svårt att argumentera mot en sådan inställning. Klurigt att övertyga en sådan kille om att han i stället borde göra vad någon välbeställd manager säger åt honom.
Ja, säger du åt J.P. Harris från Montgomery, Alabama, att han borde uppträda på välproducerade CMA-spektakel inför en finklädd galapublik snarare än att stylta in på mörkbrunt inredda pubar (den sorten som har “cigarette smoke at the ceiling, sawdust on the floor”, som Kris Kristofferson pratsjöng) för att lira sin musik för en drucken skara anhängare av äkta country - då ler han snett bakom sitt yviga skägg, fullt införstådd med att du förlorat vettet.
Han kan nämligen ingenting annat. Countrymusik spelad med själ och hjärta, helt befriad från prefix och insvepningar i luddiga genrenamn såsom americana eller singersongwriter, är vad J.P. Harris sysslar med, och han gör det så bra att inte ens den ansedda tidningen Esquire kunde förhålla sig objektiv när de i höstas fick äran att ha världspremiär för låten “Give a little lovin’”:
“J.P. Harris is the real deal. This ain't your glam country music, with rhinestones and glitter and man-perms. He's an ex-gutter punk road warrior making down-home American honky tonk, the way it should be, from both the heart and the bottom of a whiskey bottle. [...] Harris isn't just perpetuating musical stereotypes; he's the actual living, breathing, authentic thing, and it shows in his music.”
J.P. Harris har till dags dato släppt två album - “I’ll keep calling” från 2012 samt fjolårets “Home is where the hurt is”. Den senaste skivan gästas bland andra av stjärnskottet Nikki Lane samt Chance McCoy som vanligtvis är frontman i Old Crow Medicine Show.

At some point, every country music star sings a song about roughing it. Most of them are faking it; condescending to the roughnecks and hourly workers who faithfully buy their fictions. The increasing distance between the people who make country music and the people who live it has caused something of a crisis of authenticity for the genre. Enter J.P. Harris, who along with the Tough Choices, has been 'resurrecting the ghosts of a time when real, hard core honky tonk ruled the airwaves; before the words ‘pop’ or ‘new’ ever met the word ‘country.
